ABOUT ME

Hello! My name is Gwenna Council, and I’m a junior at Arvada West High School. I’m very interested in the majority of available art mediums, digital art included. My style consists of 2D stylized acrylic paintings and pencil drawings. I am an outdoorsy person, and love to hike and camp. As of now, I think that it would be fun to become graphic designer or a storyboard artist for an animation studio.

ARTIST STATEMENT

For me, art is the highest form of self expression. It’s always fascinating that I am able to take an idea and make it tangible. Something that had been a private part of my mind is now real and exposed, and I have fallen in love with this form of pronunciation. Art is my voice, and I rely on it when presenting myself to the world.

I have held a tender spot in my heart for the expansive world that is art since I was very young. I’ve always enjoyed putting a pen or pencil to paper and watching as my hand leaves behind a trace of my existence. Drawing and painting alike are enjoyable to me, and I often resort to them when experiencing fits of boredom or anxiety. I get lost easily in the strokes of a paintbrush or the repetitive scratching of charcoal against paper.

My art is difficult to describe. It covers a wide range of materials and topics, so there is no one word that can sum up my work. Some pieces contain a much deeper meaning than what is presented on the surface, and others are just fun projects with no secrets. I may only surf the tide of the untold, or I may dive beneath the surface and truly grasp a hidden significance. I greatly enjoy drawing and painting organic figures. Watching life come to the canvas in front of me will never grow old. I use a multitude of ideas within my artwork, with a recent focus on growing up, and the simplicities of enjoyment in life. This portfolio has no one theme; it represents my progression of interest over the past year, and no piece is directly connected to another.

I enjoy experimenting with unfamiliar materials and techniques greatly. Like most artists, I hold an underlying fear of failure, but I refuse to succumb to it and, with some hesitance, will step out of my comfort zone. Exploration in art is the only way to achieve an ideal style; I have grown to understand that holding myself back will only cause me to regress in my skill rather than move forward.
